If you’re a Hong Kong-based aspiring aviator planning to undergo medical certification or flight training under Australia’s CASA regulations, obtaining an ARN (Aviation Reference Number) is your first step. And this guide walks you through the process.
What Is a CASA ARN and Why Do You Need One?
A CASA ARN is a unique identification number assigned by the Australian Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). Think of it as your aviation ID number, it’s required for any official dealings with CASA.
While it’s generally easier to apply for an ARN once you’re in Australia, if you’re planning to get your medical before your arrival (as I did for solo flight prep), you’ll need an ARN beforehand.

Step-by-Step Guide to Getting a CASA ARN in Hong Kong
1. Create a MyCASA account
Visit https://my.casa.gov.au/ and sign up using your email and a password (instead of using Digital ID)
2. Apply for ARN
Once you’re logged into the portal, you’ll see it.
2. Fill out the application form
Complete the required details directly in the portal. Upload certified copies of your proof of identity documents also directly onto the portal
All proof of identity documents must be certified as true copies before submission. While there are various ways to certify documents, I chose to use the Australian Consulate-General’s notarial services in Hong Kong which was straightforward and convenient (that comes with a price)
You simply need to make a booking online. On the day of your appointment, bring the original documents with you. The consulate staff will make a copy, certify as a true copy and stamp it. The fee is HKD $435 per document.
For my application, I certified 2 passports & 1 credit car statement.
3. Submit your application
Once you’ve completed the form and uploaded your certified documents, submit your application directly through the myCASA portal.
With this updated online approach, I’m unsure how quickly ARN applications are processed. However, when I applied back in January 2024, the process involved a more manual approach:
- I filled out the 1162 application form (a PDF)
- I emailed the completed form, along with certified copies of my proof of identity documents, to applications@casa.gov.au
- My ARN was issued just 3 days later
While my manual method worked smoothly at the time, I recommend following CASA’s latest procedures via the myCASA portal to ensure your application aligns with the current process.
